PATRICK SAMPSON
Like a silk-lined cedar chest, Patrick Sampson’s unique voice holds and communicates the precious treasures of life’s most moving moments. He comfortably draws in audiences with just a single familiar phrase. While often lauded for his voice, skillful finger-picking provides a lush complement to the vocal melodies that beckon audiences of numerous genres.
Patrick doesn’t just write for the sake of creating or performing—music is a connective force for this curious young artist, a way to build community while also helping others connect to the truths within themselves. Patrick writes with an open heart, believing that each of his songs has its own life, its own path into the psyches of listeners all over the world. Part spiritual, part alchemical, the transformations that occur in those moments of penning a brilliant lyric and sharing it with others through honest, unguarded performances are what inspire his journey day in and day out.
A distinct and emotive pop sensibility reflects many of Patrick’s influences—Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, and Ben Howard—while hints of Americana and folk reflect others like Gregory Alan Isakov, Foy Vance, and Gary Clark, Jr. With three full-length albums under his belt (2023’s Knitting Blue, 2020’s Altrové, and 2016’s The Wanderer), Patrick’s newest singles are calling in a new chapter for the troubadour, who has enjoyed a recent foray into collaborative songwriting. His newest single, “Paper Planes” (out July 18, 2024) was written with the feather-voiced Czechian artist &Tilly.
“I released the single ‘Airport Song’ in spring—something in it was nagging at me to get it out, even though I wasn’t planning on recording and releasing anything at the time,” says Patrick. “The song connected with a lot of my listeners, and it kickstarted my creativity. I began writing more new music for my next album, as well as co-writing with some amazing artists in a couple of collaborative efforts that I’m very excited to share.”
A native of Watertown, New York, Patrick tours regularly across the US, making sure his audiences have a song they can turn to in any moment of life. His live shows offer the best of both worlds; sometimes he silences crowds with a moving, contemplative ballad or lyrical folk narrative, while other songs invoke sing-a-longs and blues-rock jams. Patrick uses music to connect with audiences—”newfound friends” as he calls them—through the somber times and the joyous ones.
Years of touring and a contagiously kind spirit have established an impressive fanbase for Patrick. Patrick loves God, his wife, and his pitbull and is happy to talk with anyone about his immense appreciation of the “galaxy far, far away” and about how Star Wars has impacted his life and fully tattooed left arm. He’s endorsed by Gretsch guitars.
