This is the Folk Art of Abe Partridge from the cultural ghetto of Mobile, Alabama.
Abe Partridge left Mobile when he was 18 in pursuit of a Theological education. He attended 4 bible colleges in 4 years... partly because he couldn't follow rules, partly because he knew better. Abe became a pastor of a small Independent Baptist Church in the Appalachians of Eastern Kentucky at 25 years old. When he was 27 years old Abe became acquainted with a horrible depression. He left the ministry and turned to Art. Abe has written songs and created paintings like these for years. Only after joining the military and going to war did Abe decide to begin sharing his art with the world. He never took a songwriting class, nor has he ever had an art class. Abe always just thought he was weird... Rethink preconceived notions. Question authority. Create new methods of survival. See beauty. - Abe
Abe's art work is made with roofing tar that is thinly applied to ply wood and cured for 30 days. He then carves his images in the tar with a screw driver or an ice pick. Finally, he paints the tar with acrylic paints and seals it with a clear acrylic automotive sealer.
